Five Mood-Boosting Tips When You Are Stuck at Home This Winter

This year has brought many challenges, complications, unforeseen circumstances, and cancellations that have caused many of us to feel down about our lives.  We have spent time adjusting to new routines, making changes we never knew we'd have to make, and trying to stay connected to family and friends.  Staying at home and cancelling plans has also made life difficult for many, especially those that already struggle with anxiety or depression.  This winter, we will continue to stay home to slow the spread.  As a counselor in Orlando, we offer a few tips that will help you and your family stay positive when you are staying home this winter.

Get Outside When You Can

A great way to boost your mood is to take a walk or spend time outside.  If you are feeling lonely, ask a friend or neighbor to go to the park with you, and sit from a safe distance so that you can enjoy some company.  Visit the beach for the day or spend time boating or enjoying other water activities.  Exposure to the sun gives you Vitamin D, which also boosts your immunity and overall health.

Call Family and Friends

When you are feeling isolated or stuck, give your friends and family a call on the phone.   Talking with loved ones will give you a sense of community, despite all the distance between you.  Also, this promotes healthy relationships and engagement that is essential to boost your mental health.  Don't be afraid to discuss your struggles or ask for help when you are having a difficult time.

Create a Routine

Routines are essential in understanding how to get what you need in your daily life.  By establishing a routine when you are stuck at home, you add structure and consistency to your life.  Sometimes it can be difficult to work from home, so you want to create a routine that works for you and your whole family.

Eat Healthy Meals

Nourishing your body is just as essential as taking care of your mental health.  In fact, when you eat healthier, you will keep your mind sharper and clearer.  Instead of binging on junk food, alcohol, or other unhealthy pantry snacks, stock up on foods that provide your body with the nourishment it needs.  Meal prepping can also help you stick to a healthier diet.

Take Breaks from Technology

It's no secret that the media and news coverage continue to update us on what's going on in the world.  This includes many negative stories, whether they are politically charged or updating us with new infection numbers.  Whenever you are feeling overwhelmed by the news, take a break from technology.  Turn off your TVs, computers, and phones, and find something else to do that brings you joy.

These are just a few of the mood-boosting tips you can follow to stay positive and strong when you are stuck at home this winter.  Even though the Florida weather will not keep us trapped indoors, we still want to stay cognizant of the community we live in and keep our distance, no matter how difficult it can be.  If you struggle with mental health during this time, you want to reach out for guidance and support from our counselor in Orlando.  Contact us to schedule an appointment today.
