The best outcome of CEN therapy is more awareness of the breadth and depth of emotions and the value they bring.
If you grew up with your feelings overlooked, you can reach adulthood successful, capable, and quietly numb, and never quite know why. That is what childhood emotional neglect does. At Evolve Counseling & Wellness, I am a certified CEN therapist in Orlando, and I help people reconnect with a part of themselves they were taught to ignore. What Is Childhood Emotional Neglect?
Childhood emotional neglect, or CEN, is a parent's failure to respond enough to a child's emotional needs. It is not abuse. It is more often the opposite of a dramatic story, which is exactly what makes it so hard to see. Many of my clients grew up in a home that looked fine from the outside, with parents who were present and well meaning, and they still absorbed the message that feelings were not worth much attention. Dr. Jonice Webb named this pattern, and once people hear it, something clicks. They finally have a word for the vague sense that they are different, disconnected, or empty, without a single bad memory to point to as the cause.
What Does Healing Actually Look Like?
It starts with learning a skill most people assume they already have: noticing what you feel. When your emotions were ignored growing up, you never got fluent in them, so we build that fluency together. You learn to name feelings, sit with them instead of pushing them down, and treat them as useful information rather than inconvenient noise. I use Dr. Webb's framework and her Emotional Neglect Questionnaire to guide the work, and I give you things to practice between sessions. The relationship we build matters here too, because for a lot of clients this is the first place their inner world has ever been met with real attention. Over time, that is what the change looks like: the full range of your emotions coming back online, and you finally trusting that they are worth something.
How Does CEN Affect My Own Parenting?
This comes up constantly, because most of my CEN clients are determined not to pass it on. You are raising kids and realizing no one ever showed you how to name a feeling or help someone else through one. So we get specific about what was missing for you and what healthy looks like instead. We also make room for the feelings parenting stirs up in you. When your child melts down and something in you wants to shut it down fast, that reaction usually has roots. Naming it is the first step toward choosing a different response, and toward giving your kids the thing you did not get.
What Usually Brings People to CEN Therapy?
Often it is a quiet recognition rather than a crisis. Many of my clients find me through Dr. Jonice Webb's directory, where I am listed as a certified CEN therapist, after reading about emotional neglect and thinking, that is me. Others come in for something else, anxiety, a relationship that keeps hitting the same wall, a flatness they cannot explain, and we uncover the CEN pattern underneath as we go. It rarely arrives with a dramatic story, which is exactly why it goes unnoticed for so long. People will tell me their childhood was fine and their parents were good people, and all of that can be true at the same time as the fact that their emotional needs were quietly overlooked. If any of this is landing a little too close to home, that recognition is worth paying attention to. It usually means there is something real and workable here, not that you are broken or making it up.
You can learn to feel again, and it is worth it. Read more about childhood emotional neglect therapy, then call (407) 616-5948 or send me a message to begin.
